Children give funds to help playground
Children at three local churches donated more than $3,000 to help renovate a playground at the Calvary Refuge Center, a homeless shelter and transitional housing center in Forest Park.
The children at Braelinn Baptist Church in Peachtree City collected $2,500 during the church's vacation Bible school last summer. Children who attended vacation Bible school at Tara Baptist Church in Jonesboro and Liberty Baptist Church in Riverdale contributed hundreds of dollars in pennies, nickels and dimes.
"When children are helping children, it definitely makes a difference," said Tawana Tarno, public relations and volunteer coordinator for Calvary Refuge Center. "These children chose this project as the best place to contribute their money. It's wonderful."
Tarno's son, Brock Tarno, who is now the worship of arts and student minister at Lighthouse Community Church in Stockbridge, served as worship leader at Braelinn Baptist's vacation Bible school.
"Brock kept encouraging the children to contribute and told them that anyone who brought a $100 bill could throw a pie in his face," said Tawana Tarno. "On the last day, five children brought in $100 bills."
Adamson Middle School in Rex also contributed to the playground renovation at the center, which is housing 37 children from infants to age 18.
Calvary Refuge Center always needs volunteers to do a variety of jobs, including answering phones, serving meals and tutoring children. Call 404-361-5309 for more information.
